by The Rt Rev Mark O’Toole, Bishop of Plymouth on Saturday 14th July 2018
Bridport Catholic Parish had a unique day of celebration on Saturday the 14th July. For the first (and perhaps only) time in its history the Parish Church in Victoria Grove hosted an Ordination Mass. Celebrated by the Bishop of Plymouth, the Rt Rev Mark O’Toole, local parishioner and schoolteacher Mark Brown was ordained as a Deacon. Deacons and priests who know him joined his family and parishioners for the occasion, with a choir of young singers from St Augustine’s School at Weymouth where Mark teaches.
After the Ordination Mass there was a reception in a marquee on the lawn of the presbytery next door to the church. The following day Deacon Mark preached his first sermon at the Parish Mass.
Mark has been in formation for the diaconate at St John’s Seminary at Wonersh near Guildford. As well as a ministry further afield and other responsibilities that may come his way, he will be an assistant to the Parish Priest, Canon Richard Meyer, and serve the people of Bridport parish.
